At the most basic level, determining who the customer is, what they want, why they buy and where they live -  is critical to good marketing. Unfortunately, many marketing budgets don’t fund significant research. Fortunately, a lot of the statistics and demographic information can be obtained, for free, from the government. This data can be really useful when creating your marketing plan. While it is not a substitute for quality market research such as surveys and focus groups, it can provide helpful data to help determine the direction of that research.
